What I liked

I loved the conceit of headlamp lighting. The dark-play of this piece is incredibly effective. I have a personal affinity for lighting without conventional theatrical fixtures, and the choice to perform this whole piece with headlamps is incredibly effective. So many things to learn from this, not least of which the commitment of the performers to creating a world in the dark. This is the finest example of Fringe Theatre.

What I didn't like

I think the biggest thing that needs to be improved about this show is the fact that, after a few more performances, we won’t be able to see it. I would love to see this in a site-specific area, such as a blackout cave or other such space.

My overall impression

What an absolute rush. Heightened poetry drawn from miner colloquialisms crash against the weaponization of classic country music in a deeply uncomfortable piece. At times, I forgave myself for following the eyeline of the actors in seeing the barely-resolved dangers of the caved-in coal mine, staged in an otherwise unassuming dance studio at Thymele Arts. One wouldn’t think the comfort of fluorescent lights and the promise of safety in relatively familiar circumstances would be so sorely missed, but as promised, immediately after a significant playlist, we find ourselves plunged into a hauntingly intimate story. This piece is dangerous, and it will stay with you.
