The differentiation of characters, both Nerds and Bullies, allows the audience to find and relate to at least one. No matter which, the well acted roles and smart script draws you in and connects to your own jr. high memories. The music, specifically lyrics, are the emotional strength of The Bully Problem. Coming Out of the Basement will be a classic.
What I didn't like
The role of professor of JIT was the only disconnect. It was hard today tell if he was intentionally awkward or earnest in delivery. This wasn’t the acting as much as it the script.
The subplot and brief off stage appearance of the deceased father muddled the storyline. The repeated “keep him away from adults” seemed unnecessary as there are only two brief times an adult was on stage (mom and teacher.)
My overall impression
Smart, on point, and relatable, The Bully Problem sings and dances through a narrative arch to a solution that makes the audience cheer.
