I thought the ever present cat psyche with the cast rolling in and out of it was a nice touch. The dream sequence visual was great.
What I didn't like
Some of the staging and choreography felt pretty old school and most of the crass humour was so unnecessary – it felt out of place with the rest of the dialogue. Some of the lyric rhymes were a touch cringeworthy.
The story arc of ‘I’m here. Oh, now I’m gay. Now I’m dead’ was just odd. Nothing about it seemed to mean anything beyond some cheap laughs.
I would have enjoyed it more if it had been 30 minutes shorter, and I think there’s some bits that could go.
My overall impression
Fun musical with nice theatrical touches in places, some unfortunate unnecessary crass humour in others. It would benefit from tightening up and trimming 30 minutes off of it.
