What I liked

The cast brought tremendous energy and commitment to the ensemble numbers, with fun choreography, prop work, and a funny “meowed” lyrical motif. Isabel Caxide as Angel the Cat, stole many scenes with small moments of charming feline business, alternating between affectionate engagement and total indifference, with surprisingly accurate growls of warning and discontent. Cats are often like this!

What I didn't like

Without having seen the movie, key mechanisms of the story weren’t clear, like when, why, and how Angel the Cat had been possessed, exactly how the possession worked and if (and how) it could be defeated. While the cat ensemble was initially presented as the spirits haunting Angel, they didn’t appear to be directing her behavior, which made the nature of their power over her unclear.

New human characters were often abruptly introduced with only a sentence of exposition identifying their purpose in the story, the rest of the characterization relying on broad stereotypes and accents. There was some knowing laughter in the audience at some of these entrances; perhaps the show requires the context the movie to be fully appreciated.

My overall impression

A fun idea with lots of energy and commitment, but chaotic plotting and character introductions often made for a confusing and sometimes frustrating experience for those unfamiliar with the source material.
