What I liked
I really connected with the second piece in particular. The script, performances, themes and tones came alive for me in all the right ways. Emotional without being manipulative, and portrayals so grounded and real I wanted to spend time with the characters (as opposed to the actors) afterward.
The use of percussion throughout both pieces as both score and sound effects worked quite well, and seeing the musicians above the stage in plain sight seemed “right” somehow in a way that is hard to articulate.
What I didn't like
The inevitability of the of the first piece disconnected me from it a bit. And I wasn’t sure whether the priest was meant to be a sympathetic character at all or simply a monster in savior’s garb. These elements together resulted in less of an impact on me.
In the second half the prop gun is occasionally aimed out into the audience in a way that, although we all know it’s a prop, probably shouldn’t happen, especially in such an intimate space. It is an unnecessary distraction.
My overall impression
Two very different pieces that none-the-less fit together for a compelling evening of theatre. Evocative percussion, effective use of the space, and solid technical elements. The subject matter is heavy so best know what you are in for.
