What I liked

Directing, composition and story. The tenor playing the character “Chance” has an exquisite voice.

What I didn't like

The pacing at the beginning was a bit off, but that should improve with the performers familiarity with the piece. Also a few of the singers diction was difficult to follow in the more fast paced vocal passages, but that is easily fixed.

My overall impression

The show was well written and the composition lines and voicing were well crafted. DeRosa is one of the most promising young talents in the world of orchestration and composition. There aren’t many composers writing new operas these days. Her work is refreshing and brings a revitalization to a dying craft which is long overdue.

The staging and direction by Clymer allowed for the show to have a very balanced visual feel and the homage to composers of the past was sweet and endearing.

I love seeing lighthearted humor in a time where there are so many darker forces at play in this world and “Gunfight” was a lovely escape from the mundane, campy and droll theatre you so often see masquerading as new work these days.

It is definitely a show worth watching and with a larger budget allowing for a proper orchestra, I think this show has legs to be revived for future runs.

Definitely a must see for the fringe season!
