What I liked
Tanya Thomas is a gifted actress and is able to embody a multitude of characters, each with a unique voice. I enjoyed and relate to the way Tanya chose to tell her story through the lens of a fun, bold, and energetic drag queen named Tanvi and it is magical to see Tanya embody Tanvi. It’s beautiful to see Tanya’s journey and to see how she comes to realize that the power and strength of Tanvi are always accessible to her because Tanya is, herself, fun, bold, and energetic.
What I didn't like
How can you fault something near-flawless? I’m terrible at critiques. Let’s say I have a wish list and at the top of that list is to see Tanvi in FULL drag. Due to the nature of the show I know that is not feasible but it would be fantastic. If I must leave a critique, then it would be to theatergoers to be on time and if the seats on the sides of the stage are the only option, try not to draw attention to yourself. Allow yourself to be transported to Singapore through the eyes of the phenomenal Tanya Thomas.
My overall impression
“Naturally Tan” is a well-crafted show expertly performed by the incomparable Tanya Thomas. The show is personal, deep, and honest as well as funny and relevant. In an age where we are absolutely seeing an increase in movies and tv shows that represent a diverse world, “Naturally Tan” reminds us we still have a long road ahead because so many voices are still left behind. Tanya humorously and courageously shows us that her voice will not be silenced and that representation matters.
