This play seamlessly and powerfully weaves together many timely and poignant themes—from sexual harassment in the workplace, to toxic masculinity, to the inhumane attacks on immigrant families, to the strength and power of collective action. These are the stories of real people told by real people—presented with the perfect combination of drama, humor, and hope. The writing was spectacular and the acting was unforgettable. So many of the scenes have stuck with me. And I loved that the play was presented in Spanish and simultaneously translated into English. It is the best play I have seen in a long time!
What I didn't like
Nothing! I hope we see more from this group next year!
My overall impression
California janitors are the vanguards of the #metoo movement and Ya Basta: Time’s Been Up beautifully captures their fight for justice, respect, and an end to workplace abuse and violence. Despite obstacles and adversity, they have persevered and won victories that reverberate beyond the janitorial industry. This is the inspiring story of the incredible things people can achieve when they come together in a union.
