I thought it was a very creative form of “popular education” to educate the Spanish speaking masses around sexual assault and the need to change the culture. The scenes and props were also very realistic of a Janitorial breakroom and those were real janitors who have fought for dignity and respect and have been part of the Justice 4 Janitors movement in LA! I left with a strong sense of hope for the future and for social justice.
What I didn't like
The characters could be further developed. In addition, it would have been even more exciting to see these women take on sexual assault at home and/or in the community as well. Careful using the word “machista”, that implies that it’s only happening in the Spanish speaking community. Let’s call it what it really is, “sexismo.”
My overall impression
I loved the show “Ya Basta!” It was powerful to see so many immigrant women unapologetically taking on sexual assault and violence in the workplace.
