What I liked

I loved RMS’s ability to juggle conflicting tones. Her ability to land a punchline and then make you cry is astoundingly impressive.

What I didn't like

I would have loved to see the author dive even deeper into what it means for her to share so many personal connections with Frank. Their two lives are so similar in so many ways it feels like there’s even more fruitful subject matter there.

My overall impression

“Shiva for Anne Frank” is a masterclass in tight-rope walking. Rachel McKay Steele’s ability to bounce between the tragic, the hilarious, and the offensive shouldn’t work, and yet this piece soars. A great reminder that the political is always best expressed through the personal, Shiva for Anne Frank is a must see.
