About the Project
Watch how one person weaves together lost family photos found at a flee market with poetry and song in a one woman poetry performance. In her piece “Just Talk to Me”, student poet Darla Howell attempts to define blackness through poetry, music, and photography. She explores themes related to sexuality, identity, and the otherization that black children face in a predominantly white environment. She attempts to archive the forgotten memories in old photographs and truly explore what it means to exist.
There’s something universal about being black, it’s the reason we nod our heads when we pass we each other in the street, it’s the reason we side eye black people that don’t carry that same acknowledgement. And so the question I’m posing here is, is that if there’s something universal about blackness, what is it? Why are we all tied together merely by our skin. Why can I look at photos of black women or black children, or black men, and somehow feel connected to their story. Even if I have no idea what they went through, I can guess, but I will never know.
