What I liked
I loved the atmosphere created in Death Unit – even though it was in a black box theater and they had no set I could really see where it was set, the brick walls, the old elevator, the hanging electric lights. The second piece had some very specific and detailed writing that was brought home by some powerful and connected performances from some truly wonderful actresses.
What I didn't like
The evening can be a bit overwhelming but in a really exciting way. I would love to see both of these pieces expanded into longer pieces. Death Unit has such an original voice and creates an almost mystical environment. Lost Voices delivers three powerful personal stories through monologues and authentic performances, but I would love to see them grow into more interaction and for the context of the trial to be even more specific. Honestly, however, a truly wonderful evening from a pair of promising writers.
My overall impression
These are two powerful one acts. Both tackle thorny issues in an unexpected way. The cast is really great – these are strong productions of two truly innovative plays.
