What I liked
The writing and choices of what to tell/what to leave out offered a clean arrangement of a multi-decade narrative. That’s not an easy task. Staging was similarly clean, simple and just enough to give me a sense of steady, forward motion. Allowing Mara to share her musical skill offered a lovely texture, along with being imperative to her survival story.
What I didn't like
The space and/or lighting choices are not projection-friendly, and I would like to be able to soak in the images – they were clearly an intended part of the show structure that isn’t yet fully realized. Perhaps strengthening the BW contrast of the photos would help, or pulling back on center lights (if possible) so the projections are not washed out.
My overall impression
This is more than theatre; it’s an intimate personal sharing of a beautiful relationship that has stood up against incredible odds – delivered by the two people who have lived it. Kudos for writing, directing and the fearlessness of Mimi and Mara, who are opening their lives onstage so we the audience can understand the Trans marriage experience. It was one “ah-hah” moment after another for me – and I’m LGBT!
