What I liked

The acrobatic talents of the performers were beautifully accompanied by the traditional African music played by the band. The blending of song, capoeira, and acting was well executed and made for a cohesive storytelling experience.

What I didn't like

While the performances were good overall, some lines said from the stage were difficult to hear. However, this did not draw much away from the story and overall, the message was delivered.

My overall impression

Palmares was an exciting production exploring the history of slavery, freedom, and war in 17th century Brazil. The play incorporated capoeira along with acting and storytelling to tell the tale of King Ganga Zumba and his greatest general, Zumbi. The story was engaging, moving, and well-executed. The display of capoeira was weaved beautifully into the production and incorporated kicks, cartwheels, flips, and roll. The entire experience kept me engaged and invested in the story. Overall, an excellent play!
