What I liked

The 3 actors who played the Exu were amazing. They were so separate in their personalities and yet they merged effortlessly when they became one, like a Greek chorus. The older actor, his physicality was just as limber as the younger two. The female was riveting, couldn’t take my eyes off of her and the Red Exu was delightfully funny, whether he was trying to be or not.
Other stand out characters were Mae de Santo, Zumbi, Marena, and Ganga Zumba.
The direction and choreography was so creative. Just really great physical storytelling.
The live musicians were so in-tuned with the performances, having them on stage was an added bonus, adding to the whole production.

What I didn't like

In the preview, one actor in particular seemed to struggle with lines. Hopefully they will get better throughout the run.

My overall impression

Wow. Go. To. This Show. The physicality of these performers is insane. The passionate acting of these capoeira artists is authentic. And the capoeira of these actors is unbelievable. The story is easy to follow, even if you don’t know the history of Palmares. I love that it is historical, educational and entertaining at the same time. It does not feel like 90 minutes. The direction is so creative for literally a blank stage and I was surprised with the comedy that they were able to find in this production. All and all, it was just an exhilarating night of theatre. It really is what fringe is about.
