Her vocabulary is superb. Her poetry is compelling. Her acting is powerful. It was magnetic and drew me in as she took the audience on an exciting rollercoaster of story telling. The director and stage crew did a phenomenal job as well.
What I didn't like
The lighting had a few glitches but it was the first show so I know it will improve. The pace was a little fast at the beginning as she sped through dense dialogue but it was still understandable. You have to really pay attention to not miss anything because she covered so much…it’s hard to say so many important things in such a short amount of time from such a brilliant mind.
My overall impression
Remarkable! Shanara was captivating. She was able to summarize the complexities of being an African American woman into 1 hour, while mixing tragedy with humor. Using her own history as a back drop to her story telling, she also intertwined current media events.
