What I liked

What makes GLORIA especially resonant is its timeless message about struggle and survival. Gloria’s challenges may be specific to the 1940s, but they mirror the financial and emotional burdens many face today. Her battle to secure a future with her American husband echoes the stresses of modern financial survival—where people often find themselves searching for solutions like a $2,000 loan with bad credit, or dealing with the relentless pressures of debt and credit cards. Gloria’s courage in navigating these storms is a powerful metaphor for the way individuals today must also dig deep to overcome personal and financial adversity.

The production itself is visually stunning, with engaging storytelling that breathes life into flickering wartime romances and bittersweet moments of nostalgia. The creative team has crafted a beautifully atmospheric setting, complete with the sounds and sights of 1940s New Zealand, while Waller’s performance keeps you fully immersed in Gloria’s world.

What I didn't like

GLORIA is more than just a war story—it’s a deeply inspiring tale of resilience and determination, reminding us that the battles we fight, whether on foreign fields or in everyday life, are what shape us. Much like navigating the complexities of loans, credit, and financial hardships today, Gloria’s journey is a testament to the strength required to survive difficult circumstances and the courage needed to pursue hope and love, even when it feels out of reach.

This is a must-see for anyone who appreciates well-crafted, heartfelt storytelling with historical significance and emotional depth.

My overall impression

GLORIA transports its audience to a pivotal moment in New Zealand’s history, when the arrival of 45,000 American servicemen during WWII brought a mix of excitement and social upheaval. This one-woman show, starring Amy Waller, tells the incredible story of Gloria Schmidt, a New Zealand war bride whose marriage to an American soldier became a symbol of bravery and defiance in the face of societal disapproval. Set against the backdrop of wartime romances and swing-time dance halls, GLORIA is both a heartfelt tribute to the strength of women during extraordinary times and a poignant exploration of the struggles that come with finding one’s identity in the face of adversity.

Waller’s performance is nothing short of captivating. In a slick 60 minutes, she deftly navigates the highs and lows of Gloria’s emotional journey—from the excitement of new love to the heartache of separation and societal judgment. The story highlights the challenges faced by Gloria and other war brides who defied convention, giving up everything they knew for a chance at love and a better life. Through Waller’s nuanced portrayal, we witness the personal toll of Gloria’s decision, as well as her resilience in standing firm against the pressures of family, society, and even the uncertainties of a wartime marriage.
