June 18, 2018What I liked
The monologues. I would want to see the shooter grappling with his ideology, choices, and future alone in solitary confinement rather than pontificating at what seemed to be random reporter.
What I didn't like
Who was the reporter? Why was she interviewing him? Was she writing for a school paper or MSNBC? She seemed to only exist as a reason for the shooter to tell the story. Her costume did not communicate anything about her status either. Why did she wear Van Gogh socks? The actress did well with the role, but I had so many questions about the role itself. In addition, all of her comments towards him were derogatory and rude. The character never switched tactics. Also, the shooter seemed willing to say whatever to the reporter. He did not seem to feel like his only goal of telling his story was in any danger of not being accomplished.
My overall impression
This could have been a one man show. Monologues helped the audience picture the violence very well. The shooter seemed arrogant and scared. I couldn’t take my eyes off of him. The show hits a lot of points about why someone wants to shoot up a school and gives an accurate analysis of the type of person who would commit such a heinous act of violence. The ending made me jump, and I felt terrified when he addressed the audience. Well done.
