What I liked
The thoughtfully written lyrics of Ms. Verlo’s musical compositions enhanced the story with wit and humor. The recorded male voice was flawless, and understandable. Use of puppets to tell the parents’ side of the story, and use of the shawl to become a different person on stage… very clever! It worked great.
What I didn't like
In live theater, the performer on stage has to deliver each line, each word, every lyric, so the viewers in the last row can understand it perfectly, and of course it has to sound like normal conversation too….. Ms. Verlo delivered the lines well, but still I lost a word here and there. This town, LA, is filled with film and TV performers who often don’t understand this basic concept of a live performance.
The stage lighting was less than it could have been… lots of dark shadows on Ms. Verlo’s face. I sensed she had the script before her, which is perfectly OK. I noticed she looked over her shoulder frequently as if to see what slide was up. This was distracting.
My overall impression
Ms. Verlo’s show explores a taboo subject with heartfelt honesty, shedding welcome light on today’s issues swirling around what’s OK and what’s not OK with sex.
