What I liked
There are multiple emotional scenes as the three characters try to work through a seemingly hopeless situation. Their performances left the audience in tears.
This is heavy, dramatic theater. The cast is incredibly strong. There is not a false moment in the entire show.
Smartly directed, the mental and physical toll this predicament is taking on these lives is played out as the characters care for each other, often having to physically move or guide the injured veteran from scene to scene. He becomes a physical symbol of the disruption his presence brings to others’s lives.
What I didn't like
Not a suggestion for improvement, but an observation… I wonder what this piece would feel like on a more detailed set? Perhaps even a set that never allowed the injured character to ever leave sight of the audience, emphasizing his influence on those caring for him. A remount of this piece in a more permanent home would be a worthy endeavor.
My overall impression
Wounded is one of the most emotionally complex and devastating plays I have seen in a long time. Strong, raw, gut-wrenching performances of a challenging play makes this a deeply moving experience.
Telling the story of a woman caring for her husband, tragically injured in war, and how she tries to regain some of her own identity back, this becomes a harrowing tale of people struggling to make it though life day by day. Definitely one of my favorite plays I have seen at this year’s Fringe.
