What I liked
I liked the way Cooper created characters, with nuanced subtlety and interesting quirks, as well as well defined physical movements and vocal traits. I especially liked and appreciated how he told his whole story, which includes some very dramatic and hard truths with a willingness and an intention to share with humor, insight and the energy of hope and healing. I never felt that he was telling a vicitm story; quite the opposite, his story rings true as a hero’s journey, full of humor, fun, hardship, and enlightenment. He takes us on his journey, and on the way he reveals the growth of the characters in his play as well, some of them unlikely suspects, which makes their transformation even more enjoyable . Cooper shares real people and gives us a peek into what it was like for him as the only black kid in an all white school. He tells his story with love for himself, as well as love for everyone else. His performance is refreshing and demonstrates a new way to tell an old story, his perspective is fascinating and unique . His message is one that every human on earth could benefit from hearing. I loved this show!!
What I didn't like
It was pretty close to perfect. If anything, maybe act more and talk less; but even as I write this, I’m not sure….Cooper’s narratives are so honest and compelling. Maybe, slow down and give even more depth of emotion. Go deeper and allow for the raw, authentic emotions to come out. I sensed that he was a little aware of the audience, in the way of maybe not wanting to offend anyone. His smile is disarming, warm and comforting, but I wonder if it might have been a way to soften the blow for those of us who might feel terrible witnessing his story. Let the audience feel terrible! What I mean is, if Cooper honestly feels those smiles, than great. If there is more emotional truth , such as genuine anger, fear, rage, or whatever, I want to see that!
My overall impression
This show is well produced, well written, well acted and profoundly poignant. The pacing of the storytelling combined with the dramatizations of the events touched me. I felt like I was there with the character and I was deeply moved. Bravo and thank you for sharing your unique perspective. Your message reveals the pain of racism while giving us the message that there is hope and the potential for goodness, love and connection in all of us. Thank you! I recommend this show for every adult human. It is a heart, mind, eye opener! It is also funny and very entertaining as well! You’ll have great time, I promise!
