I liked the factual portrayals of two women’s lives, which provided me with information I previously did not know about them. In both performances, the character was developed sufficiently to give greater insight into the struggles and challenges each one faced, as well as whatever successes she achieved.
What I didn't like
Every project improves with practice. I saw all four performances of “Portraits,” and the third show was undeniably the best of them all. The theater was sold out and the crowd was fully engaged with both portrayals. There was a rare energy in the air during the Zelda show, and Sarah Wheeler delivered a masterful interpretation of her troubled character. This was a difficult role yet Sarah made it real. It was at times painful to watch because I hurt so much for Zelda. It would be hard for a sensitive person to sit through that performance without being deeply moved.
My overall impression
Both “Portraits” were well done and left me with a positive impression. Lucy Greene as Lucille Ball was witty and quick and entertaining. Sarah Wheeler as Zelda Fitzgerald was deep and empathetic. The combination was powerful and uplifting.
