What I liked
I discovered much of the movement was improvised, which shows the high degree of skill the performers have. Specifically, the juxtaposition of the imagery, the movement, and the main character’s journey is emotionally charged. I like that this isn’t a piece that is “easy” to sit through. In times of division, even within movements claiming empowerment, to see such a piece performed by this many strong women owning their sexualness isn’t for the weak or the judgemental. Prepare to be challenged.
What I didn't like
Enforcing a “no late entry” policy would have enhanced the experience. Perhaps cutting it off at 5 minutes late would have helped, but for this show specifically, with the distance these women were willing to go to take the audience to a different place, the door swinging open and someone walking in was somewhat unsettling. Basically, show up on time folks! hahaha!
My overall impression
Dance, like instrumental music, can touch emotions and feelings like few other art forms can. And when creatively presented, executed at a high level, and performed with such vulnerability, it’s can be as impactful as anything. “Hush” is a performance that takes the viewer on a journey that is provocative without being obvious and makes the audience truly aware of their own feelings of sexuality, boundaries, and the innocence we lose growing up, but yearn for as adults. It’s a fantastic show, not for the weak or for those afraid to look at the human body and movement in all its power and most revealing.
