Jessica and I met while working on the Open Fist Theatre’s production of Caryl Churchill’s Mad Forest. As co-producers and actors in the production, we were intimately involved with the project on many different levels and became close friends who have continued to work together over the years.
In our current political and social climate, we find it imperative to persevere as female artists that stand for social awareness, justice and change. We believe revolutions do not only take place in the violent overthrowing of governments, but that they are fought on stages, in books, through music and in photographs. Art is one of our greatest tools in the revolution taking place in America today, and with our project Raining Glass, we hope to inspire new revolutionaries and to strengthen the resolve of those that have already taken to the fight. As a feminist writer, Caryl Churchill has been a major inspiration to us as creatives. The dramatic themes of revolution, women and patriarchy that she wrote about in Mad Forest are themes we also explore in our play. Just as Churchill traveled to Romania to explore the climate that lead up to the revolution, we marched on Washington D.C. on January 21, 2017 to immerse ourselves in the feminist movement that revolted, and continues to revolt, against the inauguration of Donald Trump as the president of the United States. Our play is inspired by Churchill’s innovative storytelling and our aim is to produce a docufictional live production that incorporates linear story lines with raw march footage and with the true stories of the marchers that participated on January 21. We explore the American feminist movement from the beginning and culminate with where we are today. As storytellers and artists we hope to weaken the glass ceiling that as women, we have always known to loom above our heads. This play is merely a spear in an army of weapons that aim to crack open the restraints that have inhibited any human from experiencing equality and freedom. And, we won’t stop, until it’s raining glass.
