What I liked
It is a heartwarming tale of the ups and downs of a mom and daughter from Cuba living in New Orleans and keeping in touch with the husband and father they had to leave behind while building a relationship with their friends and neighbors.Nairoby Otero captured each character: Claridad, Mom, and Pepe and sold each one to me in an instant.
I love a show that uses minimal amount of projections to tell a story and this is one of them. Each prop was purposeful. It really put me in the 70-80s New Orleans Cuban life.
I love that Claridad’s relationship with Pepe did not supersede that of her and her father though they have minimal interaction during the whole piece. It was heartbreaking to see the wane of the mom and father’s relationship.
The father was not present in the piece beside being on the phone with his wife, and yet, I felt so much for him. Just thinking about how much it moved me makes me tear up.
What I didn't like
There wasn’t anything I didn’t like.
My overall impression
Overall, it’s a moving piece that’s multi-generational and multi-lingual and it’ll have you laughing and holding back tears. It’s a fantastic one woman show that everyone should see. From the moment she started, I was in. Please see this show!
