I really liked the concept — a woman discovers her truest self is not the life she’s been living, but rather the one that she uncovers along the way.
What I didn't like
The piece has a few repetitive sequences — and Sophie/Jane’s deep, sobbing grief, although superbly and truthfully acted, overcame her twice. Once would have had more impact. I think the entire show could be shortened by about 10 minutes and it would resonate even more.
And I gotta say this. That was the most miserable venue I have sat in in a long time. My knees were BRUISED the aisles were so tight. And for some reason the brilliantly lit house light stayed on the ENTIREPERFORMANCE, directly over my husband’s head, and really dampening my enjoyment of the whole thing. So — that show was GANGBUSTERS, given that I still LOVED it. Please, Mmslle. Sophie — je vous en prie — do not play “zaire” again! Sacre Bleu!
My overall impression
What a delightful show, taking us into the weird, wacky world of Sophie/Jane! Corinne Shor is mesmerizing as we watch her soar to the highest heights and plummet to the lowest lows.
