I loved Stephen’s unflinching commitment to the piece. He was unflappable, and owned the stage.
The script is wry and funny, despite the fact that this man killed Lincoln. An impressive feat.
What I didn't like
Assuming the director helped the actor understand the points of the story that needed to come across, it was almost lost by this closing night perf. I followed the events of his life, but I’m not sure I completely understood the story. Why is this man’s story worth being told? I think it’s in the script, and I think it’s in the actor’s performance, but it wasn’t clear in this performance. A minor quibble, really. But since you asked. ;)
My overall impression
Dark and educational, but not stodgy, in fact quite playful in this team’s hands. At times quite striking.
