About the Project
A musical based on true events, “Upstairs” is the story of Buddy and Agneau, two survivors of the 1973 Upstairs Lounge fire, a gay bar arson that took 32 lives in New Orleans. It’s been a year since the fire and Buddy, the bar’s former owner, can’t find the closure he needs to move on with his life. He seeks out fellow survivor, the troubled Agneau, and together they evoke memories and ghosts, re-living that tragic night in an attempt to reconcile with their loss. But, as the night draws to its inevitable conclusion, Buddy and Agneau discover secrets about one another that challenge their capacity for forgiveness and their hope of ever finding peace.
