My overall impression
As a frequent theater-goer, I found Paul Yen’s one-man show, “Secret Identity Crisis,” to be an extraordinary accomplishment. It is poignant, compelling, humorous, and challenging. But, most of all, it is truthful.
By using the most iconic superheroes to explore questions of self, identity, and the experience of being a member of a visible minority in Hollywood, Yen, has created a highly accessible means for audience members to grasp unto and understand the travails he and every actor of color have endured in their efforts to flourish in an environment that is still riven by stereotypes and prejudice.
Yen’s writing is articulate and powerful, and his acting demonstrates what it means to “lose oneself in character” and “to experience as if for the first time.” I cannot recommend this artistic and social triumph more highly.
