What about what I loved? One man shows can be tricky to execute and/or enjoy. This show had neither of those issues. It was intelligent, thoughtful, personal, and hilarious. Paul intertwined intimate experiences from his childhood and career with the reimagining of iconic superheroes such as Superman, Batman, and Spiderman. With each retelling, he weaved in historical references in such a compelling way that it grounded the modern realities of whitewashing as a way of perpetuating a vicious cycle. But none of this FELT like I was being force-fed his point of view, but rather moved to the conclusion by the heart-felt honesty of Paul’s performance. This isn’t just smashing open the dialogue for Asian Americans though it does just that. If you’ve EVER felt like the “other” in any situation or moment in your life, this show will resonate with you deeply. P.S. He also shattered some of the stereotypes without trying: it was bold, raw, and brave!
