Paul Yen's Secret Identity Crisis probes into the heart of the issue of racism in Hollywood. Yen takes a symbolic route, via the world of comic superheroes, to dissect his journey as an Asian-American artist. The result is funny and profound with touching recounts of his own family's passage from Vietnam to the United States and images of injustices against Asian Americans. The smart use of film and TV clips, photos, and sound effects weaves effortlessly into the narrative like a personal-theatrical documentary. Furthermore, the superhero monopolylogue (one actor plays multiple characters) enhances the narrative and reinforces the leitmotif (theme) of ethnicity identity and Hollywood. The "superhero" subtext also highlights the issue of raci... full review

AMAZING!!! Paul's performance was inspiring and so funny! The script was unique, truthful and eye opening. The way he connected each superheros story to his own was creative and so well done. He made the superheros relateable and made me think of their story in a different light. I left the threatre inspired to learn more about me and be mindful of my own views and story. II can't wait for his next performance! Next time I am being the entire family! ... full review

Through humor, self experience, and hard hitting facts Paul entertainingly educates how swept under the rug Asian American culture is, especially in Hollywood. Paul's use of relatable American heroes turned into different Asian American stories made the characters extremely genuine, and it set the tone for a very eye opening experience. Personally, I am Caucasian and come from an area where there is not a large Asian population. Most of the content in Paul's performance, I was unknowingly blind to. His performance not only opened my eyes to the absence of Asian heroism in our culture, but also the extreme amount of white washing that influences us in entertainment. Paul's performance was inspiring, and most of all made me want to be a m... full review

Fantastic one man show. Paul Yen was brilliant, funny, intense, engaging, honest, charming, and poignant. Script was extremely clever and thoughtfully written as he weaved classic superhero stories into his own life story. He delivers a powerful message that should be heard by all people regardless of color. Enjoyed it very much and since it's been sold out I hope the show will be extended for an additional run so that more people can see it. ... full review

Secret Identity Crisis played by Paul Yen was honestly captivating and mainly in the sense that you (or for me at least) truly feel the emotions that are felt by the actor towards Hollywood and how it's been centered on "whitewashing". This show does not in any means bash on white actors who are cast to tell asian stories but rather open awareness on how asians are portrayed in Hollywood and most importantly how asians are rarely or never cast for leading roles. Thank you Paul for sharing your story, your acting was incredible. Loved it!... full review

Based off of the title, I had a vague idea of what I was getting into in terms of topic and comedic value. Watching this as more of an academic and less of a comic fan, I found incredible appreciation for how he weaved a potentially complex and heated topic into a presentation that was easy to empathize with and truly enjoy. I highly recommend it to comic book fans and academics alike. This needs to be seen by EVERYONE. ... full review

Amazing. This show is a must see! Secret Identity Crisis brings awareness to the acting industry about the lack of leading roles and misrepresentation of Asian actors. As part of the Asian ethnicity and growing up in America, this show really hit home. Overall, it was amazing show and I hope his message changes the world. ... full review
