A mesmerizing look at a black actress coping with stereotypes and limited options in an audition setting veers from hysterical to heartbreaking. Sacha Elie blew my mind as she tried on, rejected, embraced and found the depth in multiple roles.
What I didn't like
A little more context on two of the characters would have been helpful in understanding Elie’s reactions to them. I was wracking my brain wondering if I was correctly remembering Diahann Carroll’s role, which took me out. Living through the ’80s helped, but not everyone was so fortunate!
My overall impression
A tour de force performance that leaves the audience gasping with insight.
