I really enjoyed Trevin Stephenson’s performance — his song was the best number in the show, and his performance felt very raw and genuine.
What I didn't like
The cast tried valiantly but they didn’t have a lot to work with — the dancing and staging were not sharp, and the songs felt more like a first draft of a Will Ferrell improvisation than a well-thought out and workshopped show.
My overall impression
The concept of this musical sounded fun and I very much looked forward to it, but the execution and writing were just not strong in the end. Admittedly I was not feeling well and had to leave after about 40 mins, but in what I saw, the writing was very simplistic and overly generalized and stereotyped. With a subject like this, humor best arises from moments of specificity that feel universal rather than painting in broad strokes. It just didn’t land for that reason.
