What I liked

The cast was almost uniformly excellent. Some standouts—and it’s hard to pick—include Dana Deruyck as Johnny, a precocious (and often obnoxious) boy; Stephanie Thomas in fine “little girl” voice as Johnny’s younger sister; Jamie Miller’s spot-on performance as older sister Alice; and Andrew Villarreal, who overplayed Roy so delightfully I’m surprised he didn’t get splinters in his teeth from all the scenery chewing.

Must add a special note for Dana/Johnny brilliantly covering the Professor forgetting some of his lyrics the night I was there by ad-libbing “I don’t speak German!”

What I didn't like

The music. Some singers were stronger than others to begin with, and others seemed stuck with music that was not really in their range. More importantly, I just plain didn’t care for most of the numbers. The melodies were inconsistent and occasionally discordant, and the rhyming lyrics often seemed rather forced. Needs more work to come up to the hilarity of the rest of the show!

My overall impression

I’ve never seen the movie “Robot Monster”; now I want to. I laughed loud and often at this extremely silly and extremely fun romp. A lot of really good performances from almost everyone in the cast. Although some were stronger singers than others, I’d say the majority were in good voice. And I truly feel for the poor actor in that robot-helmeted gorilla suit for the whole show!
