“Back to thy Future” is an exercise in pastiche, mashup, homage —a faithful retelling of the plot of the Zemeckis film, faithfully “translated” into blank verse fitting of the Bard.
The premiere production of “BTTF” will emulate comic stage interpretations of grand old British writers such as “The Compleat Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged)”, “The 39 Steps”, “The Hound of the Baskervilles” “Peter and the Starcatcher” and the Ken Ludwig “Robin Hood” — it’s a zany, fast-moving comedy that lovingly mocks its source material, as performed by a somewhat harried and overtasked ensemble of actors— who in addition to playing a film’s worth of roles, must also, Pilobolus-like, play a DeLorean, Einstein the Dog, and the Old Clock Tower.
While the script is packed with delights for classics and classic film nerds alike, the production will be a romp even for those Fringe audiences who care for neither.
