I have never known Caitlin Hart to shy away from tough subjects, and this was certainly in evidence in NORMAL. The staging, use of technical aspects in this black box, the casting, all top notch. She did a remarkable job. I would like to particularly commend Steve Madar for his performance as Peter Kurten. He clearly showed how the most likeable person among us can be the most deadly.
What I didn't like
Only that the play itself was hard to handle at times. I knew going in it would be violent and controversial, but it was even more than I anticipated. I don’t say that means it shouldn’t be done. I was just overwhelmed more than a few times. But then, isn’t that what theatre is supposed to do?
My overall impression
This show should definitely be seen, but be ready to hear some things that might be more than you bargained for (and if you’re sensitive to animals, and I am, then be prepared). But if you’re ready for a challenge to your mind and senses, this is the production for you. The performances couldn’t have been more mesmerizing and committed. And the direction was spot on.
