What I liked
What an amazing show from start to finish. The cast was able to obtain a sponsorship from a local Addiction Recovery Center, and put together a real life story about how addiction affects everyone and not many understand. It was a bit fast-paced, but under the time constraints of a Fringe show, it was understandable. Talking to some of the cast after, I found out that it was based upon a true story, that the writer put his life on trail for all to see. I’m happy he shared his story, as Sex addiction can be a hard thing that man don’t understand. Being a former Cocaine and Heroine addict myself; it was easy to relate, and I’m glad the world gets a chance to see what addiction does to those when they are not in control.
One of the things I found the most ironic was the narrator of the play, it was provided by an angelic voice who sounded sweet and innocent, even when she was informing the audience of were Scotts’ deviant behavior; the contrast may have helped me understand the addiction further. I wish she could of been live, instead of recordings. Not sure if she was sick tonight or what.
The lead who played Scott (I think?) did a phenomenal job, but it was the “aloof guy” that you see in 3 scenes that stole the show. His fierce anger and control made you feel real, made the audience…feel. Another bright point was the Girl who delivered the only monologue in the play about owning Santa Monica Blvd!
Glad they were able to arrange the show for FREE for an opening night, I wish I had more to donate at the end of the day, I may have to go back and see it again. I would definitely check it out.
What I didn't like
It was a bit fast paced, could of been slowed in parts. Maybe a brief intermission so the audience could catch their breath. The improv scene towards the end worked, but the first one distracted a bit from the story, although it was brilliantly done by all actors involved.
The venue itself was also a downfall for me. Bar was expensive, and I overheard a conversation between cast members that they were charged $35 an hour to use the a/c during tech, which they couldn’t afford.
My overall impression
Great show, will be going back to see again, to digest more the second time around. The entire cast was comfortable with content and look, not sure I have ever seen such a cohesive cast.
