Watching this masterful “slice of life” production by Rena Brannan was exhilarating and poignant. Reminiscent of Marsha Norman’s “Night, Mother” in its effortless transitions from darkness to levity, this play delivers on every level. Sophie Ward (Hester) brilliantly portrays an eccentric and likable woman whose attempts to engage Brandon Ruiter’s character, Porter, in conversation are tireless, fueled by an intense need to connect. Ward is luminous, undaunted by the magnitude of the dialogue and the subject matter, as is Ruiter. These talented actors are dynamic and wonderful to watch because of their collective facility with language, dialect and emotion.

Mount Vernon is a magnificent piece of theatre worthy of being performed on the West End and on Broadway. Kudos to this entire production team for doing such phenomenal work!
