There are a few times when the rhythm of the overall piece seems to slow down too much. The beginning section is a tiny bit too long, although I really liked it.
My overall impression
Brilliant, heartfelt, very emotional recreation of Richard Pryor – a very sympathetic, intelligent portrait of a complex performer with a tragic life. I particularly appreciated the way the beginning of the play places Pryor’s humor in a historical context of the African-American experience in America. Underneath the humor, there’s a lot of pain and a lot of history. Absolutely brilliant performance.
