Brilliant. If one wishes to see master acting at work- go see this play. Broadway and West End vet Tony Tanner is on par with the the likes of Ian McKellen and Anthony Hopkins- yet here we are gifted with seeing that greatness from but a few feet away. With the genius of the acting from Tanner one has to remind oneself that he is also the lone force behind the intelligent, richly complex and emotional writing, as well as the director of this terrific cast. All the players bring an individuality, warmth and realness that expand our view of Alzheimer’s to include not just the person diagnosed, but those intimately connected to their world. ‘Who are you anyway?’ becomes also a question for Tanner’s Dev, of who am l without my memories? and for his loved ones, who am I without you? – I don’t want to give the ending away but I will say my husband and I disagreed on what actually happens at the end- and in my view, a play that keeps the conversation going is the best play of all.
What I didn't like
Would love to see this with a bigger budget to add in more opportunities for sound and lighting. A Broadway stage perhaps…
My overall impression
Extraordinary. A deeply moving play about relationships, love, and choices in the presence of Alzheimers, and the agony for the person enduring the disease. A star turn by Tony Tanner- not to be missed by anyone that wants the rare opportunity to see genius at work. I’m not exaggerating, Tony Tanner is that good.
