My overall impression
The man who made the TOXIC AVENGER movie knew The Secret of Success in Show Biz—-AIM LOW!—-and it’s been entertaining its Cult Audience for Decades! Now it has a sweet song score and a first-rate cast (and four adept musicians) and it re-emerges as a middlebrow musical, just like POLYESTER! Of the 5 actors, JARED REED cops the titular top spot and crushes it, in a “dual role”, but he’s almost upstaged by two women—-KIM DALTON (a younger Kristin Chenoweth!) and SHIRLEY ANNE HATTON, who wows the audience playing two mature women…at the same time! Also merely Sensational are WESLEY TUNISON and DONNY FETTER, navigating dozens of quick changes as all the other citizens of Tromaville NJ. Although it’s a breathlessly pacey 95 minutes, I think it would be even better on a smaller stage and without the intermission, but I got my money’s worth of Good Time, and so will you!
