25 Plays Per Hour, while good humored, lacks any core backbone this show needs to be "AMAZING", and quite frankly, I was expecting A LOT more from Theatre Unleashed. The acting is amateur at best - not one performance is believable, the cast plays like a hastily plucked community theatre, and the play selections are all over the place. This show is more spectacle than anything else - so what, you did 25 plays in one hour - do you want a cookie? And even though it's an hour, you still find yourself wishing it would end sooner. Theatre Unleashed and their production of 25 Plays Per Hour was a smashing success, in the idea of presenting 25 plays in an hour of course. Well if you want to call them plays, more like skits. By skits I mean the kind we used to perform at summer bible camp. Campy, straight to the point, which usually if not always was some fictitious story that ended with God helping or aiding his people. I am not saying that 25 Plays, was a life changing or enlightening event but it did teeter on being preachy or over-bearing with campiness. Theater Unleashed – a Los Angeles-based theater company – has come up with a show that seems uniquely suited to the present day attention span. Webisodes and YouTube videos promise to keep us no more than 5 minutes so that we can move on to the next one. I myself find it difficult to sit through an entire movie on Netflix Streaming without conducting a few IMDb searches and Facebook checks. TU has put together twenty-five two-minute plays in one production comprised of various gags, vignettes, and monologues. This ought to keep us interested, right? ... This show will have you moving from laughing to crying within moments and pulls it off with such a delicate grace and even respect to each play performed, that not once does it feel anything like an emotional roller coaster. The bare bones set and lightning fast transitions from one scene to the next lends an easy familiarity that instantly makes you feel like you are in on the show, not just being shown it necessarily, and leaving you eager to roll with the emotional ups and downs that are littered throughout the 25 plays. I personally liked the tempo and speed of each play and felt it kept every scene feeling concise and perfectly performed. Whether we want to admit it or not, we're a remote control society, scrolling through channels like flipping through the pages of a magazine at grocery store check out. That's why 25 Plays per Hour is so addictive. I wanted each play to last longer. The ensemble is fantastic. Unlike a show with a bunch of scenes written by the same author, this show has plays written by many. It's like a buffet and your plate gets loaded with a pile of super tasty amuse bouche.
