Really enjoyed this musical. The talented cast, engaging story (retelling of the creation story with twists and turns woven into an unexpected plot) and catchy musical numbers left us interpreting the meaning and comparing and contrasting the characters and events with what we learned in Sunday school. Entertaining. Everyone should watch it at least once.... full review

Pleasantly surprised... When I hear a story has a Biblical theme, I get a little nervous. I think we've all had our fill of being preached at. However, this musical was an entirely fresh and quirky take on the creation story. Adam and Eve, reincarnated through the ages, forever in search of one another? God as three people, an old man, a transsexual, and a little girl? A sexy Lucifer who is surprisingly sympathetic? Wow. By the end of act I, I had laughed out loud dozens of times and even wept twice. By the end of the show, I was standing clapping until my hands hurt. What can I say? This show is phenomenal. I didn't even realize how invested I had become in the characters until the end where I discovered I had really been hooked. So emotional! And the music gets stuck in your head. I want the soundtrack. And I want to see this ten more times! A great story of love, betrayal, and redemption told through a modern lens in a completely timeless way. I only wish my review was half as good as the show. It deals with stories you have heard (and probably lived) your whole life in a fresh and thoughtful way. You'll be talking about it for weeks and humming the songs for at least as long.... full review

Having seen the Staged Reading a few months back, I continue to be impressed with how this show is growing. You hear Biblical musical and you immediately think of some sappy book with weak songs that ends with an altar call. Not so here. Ben takes the story of Adam and Eve and presents an alternate viewpoint that you won't hear on a typical Sunday morning. Hardly like a religious tract to present anything other than orthodoxy. And he does it with a snappy book and some wonderfully moving and creative songs. These are not "Jesus Loves Me" songs, more "Jesus Christ Superstar" songs with complex and interesting arrangements. They did a great job with the set design, particularly utilizing the characters to change it between scenes. However, this was the only element that stood out to me. Most of the songs sounded similar. For anyone familiar with the story of Adam & Eve, a lot of the story is retreading ground that's been covered lots of times before, and it doesn't mix it up or provide a unique spin on it. The parts of the story set in modern day felt very pat, none of it was that gripping or engaging. I think it could be helped a lot by embracing the humor. There were a few good laughs, but most of the story was played straight. If it were funnier, it would likely be a lot more enjoyable. ... full review

SONGS OF THE FALL is an ambitious, thoughtful, interesting retelling of the fall of Man, through the actions of Adam & Eve, from the Garden of Eden. The story is intriguing and engaging. (I would love to see how this show would soar with the benefit of a real budget.) Composer/writer Ben Boquist has a pearl of an idea here! I was glad I got to see it. I saw this for first time as a staged reading and it was good then. The re-imagining of the oldest story in the book offers new insight into the Fall and re-imagines the roles of Lucifer/Satan and how we experience sin. The acting was good. The production values are great with the exception of the sound at times. It is a deeply moving story on many levels. Lucifer, Adam and Eve are definitely the stars. Go see for yourself! You will love and may find yourself re-imagining the oldest story as well. ... full review
