My overall impression

Unlike many modern magicians, Simon is a low-key performer who keeps the audience engaged with a storyline that follows a consistent theme. He doesn’t go in for the flashy effects or the grandiose visuals or the flamboyant gestures that we have come to expect from many in his profession. He displays a rare gentlemanly demeanor that feels more like we’re sitting in his living room having a quiet chat than watching a stage performer at work. It’s a very endearing quality.

His show consists of a series of separate effects which he weaves together using the “Glitches in Reality” theme that is the title of his show. He presents a combination of classic effects and new, original material that I had never seen before. Like Simon, I am also a computer software engineer turned magician, so I was fascinated and delighted by his cell phone/website gimmick that combined modern technology with an established random pattern effect. In addition to being a compelling storyteller and an adept technologist, Simon also has superb mastery over sleight of hand and misdirection. His work with the multiplying balls and the poker chips travelling from hand to hand was flawless and spellbinding.

One thing I really appreciated about Simon was his sensitivity toward his audience. Whenever he invited an audience member onto the stage to be his assistant, they ended up becoming the star of the show during that brief appearance. As Simon said, he always wants those who are brave enough to join him on stage to have a positive experience. Once again, this is in stark contrast to many magicians who use audience members as the butt of their jokes and usually end up feeling humiliated.

Unfortunately, the show that I saw today was the final in this series. However, should Simon ever put on another public show, I highly recommend you go see him — you will not be disappointed!
