La Llorona

I particularly enjoyed the spanish scenes of this play. Martina Medina and Joaquin Camilo were brilliant!! I couldn't take my eyes off them! And of course my friend Jahel is always fun to watch! ;) You don't have to understand spanish to know what's going on during the spanish scenes- those actors are that good! I also enjoyed watching Amanda Newman in the english scenes. The lighting and SFX was a really nice touch and added to the spooky factor of the storytelling. ... full review

The show jumps back and forth from the past (how the legend came to be) and the present (a modern-day family who gets caught up in it). The tale of the legend is in Spanish while present day is in English. I was much more enthralled with the Spanish portion than the English and I don't even speak Spanish fluently. The actors are much stronger and even if you can only catch a few words here and there, their gestures and inflections make it fairly easy to know what's going on. The present day moments seemed to drag the show's pacing as many of the actors kept stumbling on their lines and lacked the energy and passion of their Spanish-speaking counterparts, although Amanda Newman (playing the role of Nicolaza) did breathe life into her scenes a... full review

This is my favorite show bar none. Don't be scared of the Spanish parts --- it's basic highschool Spanish ... nothing too challenging. The narrative pieces itself together through strong characters, a solid script, and excellent acting. I like to attend about 2-3 shows a day during all of Fringe and sometimes I check my phone thinking "eh, when is this" ... no none of that here. The choreography, costumes, props, everything was minimally beautiful and pristine. I have recommended it to so many people. Please see this.... full review

Guillermo Garcia in his one night stint as Valentino and Martina Medina (WOW!) led an ensemble of stellar performances while Kathryn Mayer's on the mark stage direction make La Llorona a true gem of the Fringe. Writer Matt DeNoto has written a script that perfectly balances the magical and the all too real horrors of modern family life. I can't stop talking about it. In general I would say the acting was good, and the structure of the play was interesting, but the best performance for me was from Martina Medina who portrays María/La Llorona. Her acting was meticulous and definitely believable. The struggle and suffer from her character was palpable, inspiring, and emotionally strong. I have to say she made me cry, feel anxious, desperate and angry according to the situation she was going trough. The way she developed character and took María from an innocent, colorful, and cheerful girl into a dark, crazy, and desperate murderer was incredible. ... full review

I enjoyed this play so much. Until now I'm still thinking about it. Martina medina was the best actress to portrayed this legendary character of mexican history. She was just stunning. All the actors were great they captured me and took me in their journey. I felt so many things that night. The play is very well written, for me as a native mexican, never understood so much the pain and the story of "La llorona" until now. it was so entertaining. La Llorona character was truly scary. There was this scene where she is by the wall then turns her face to the audience with the most DEAD ZOMBIE eyes that seemed so real. Martina is a great actress. She went through the transformation from hottie proper lady to crazy woman to psycho bitch to murderous evil spirit. She made it look easy! ... full review
