THEATRE REVIEW #286 – Hollywood & Broadway Gloria & Tallulah Talk
“”Hollywood and Broadway” Is Nostalgic Comedy With That Old Hollywood Flair!

Written By Lorenzo Marchessi If you want to see a modern take on what an afternoon with three traditional Hollywood Classic Celebrity Icons would be like, than ”Hollywood & Broadway – Gloria & Tallulah Talk” is something you should definitely see. Cleverly written and directed with lots of real Hollywood giblets of trivia and ‘Geeky” info sprinkled throughout by Octavio Carlin, as well as his stylish costume designs for the production, “Hollywood and Broadway” is a surrealistic slice-of-Old-Hollywood-life you’ll only see on stage. Olivia Choate as Tallulah Bankhead gives one of the funniest interpretations of the legendary actress you’ll ever see. Olivia is full of spitfire, energy and she’s got these looks that will constantly make you laugh out loud as she is continually being confused – purposefully – with another legend – Bette Davis. I loved her movement and even just watching her reactions made me laugh as her eyes and facial expressions ‘say it all’!

Christina Lemon as Aileen Pringle does another amazing job at giving the actress the zing and stingers she needs to makes some of the funniest ‘cat-fights’ you’ll see on stage. Christina is having a blast and the onstage banter between her and Olivia is too precious to miss. Full of zest and sarcasm, Christina is having a ball.

Kat Brower plays Gloria Swanson at the prime of her stardom. Complete with attitude and sophistication and her own ‘queen bee-ish’ snippy attitude, Kat gives it her all. Always one-upping, but always direct she and Christina seem to delight in egging-on Olivia’s character to no end, but to the audiences delight! Terrence Gene Taylor plays Lucas Wensel who is a diamond thief posing as a butler and this whole time around all these actresses is plotting (via a telephone) the diamond heist of the century right under their noses. (Literally!) Terrance is bright, light and very colorful and gives his character the real attitude it needs as he crushes Danny’s character in the process – but he ‘loves’ the ladies right out of their jewels! Danny Menedez as Thomas Reilly Bradford a hotel clerk, who is hurriedly anxious to please and be subservient, but completely oblivious to the diamond heist that’s going on around him that he eventually gets himself all ‘tied’ up in the entire situation in the end. The play gives you a lot of verbal exposition and bits of knowledge along with the wonderful period costuming – but delivers it all in these classy old-fashion stars of the golden era of film and Broadway. With nice staging, clever comic timing and just blustering with over-the-top characters – ”Hollywood & Broadway” – is just pure fun to see!

”Hollywood & Broadway – Gloria & Tallulah Talk” is a wonderfully funny play looking into the window of a day in the life of three Hollywood and Broadway acting icons, Tallulah Bankhead, Aileen Pringle and Gloria Swanson. From the costuming, to the detailed references to the attitudes of the famous, you’ll be amazed at how a jewelry heist among classic celebrities can be so funny!
