I absolutely loved WORDS FROM A CUBAN FATHER and have tickets to see it a second time! Alina Cenal's performance is nothing short of amazing. From the moment she steps on the stage, Cenal draws the audience in with her powerful energy, lyrical storytelling, dance, and poignancy. Her and her father's journey from Cuba to America, woven together in a series of flashbacks, touches the soul and has the audience laughing and crying. Cubans have big personalities and in this one woman show, Alina reflects a perfect rendition of their culture. She gives a heartwarming performance weaving you through explosive laughter one moment and tears the next. Each character is vividly depicted through hilariously animated impressions of people, places and things. Morphing into her Dad, then into her sisters, her 1st grade teacher, the aged and washed up circus performer, and so many more characters. This one hour show is packed with lessons from her father as she leads you through 50+ years of Cuban history, dance, song and what it means to be Cuban-American. Alina Cenal's brilliantly written story, Words from a Cuban Father, is a journey and an inside look into a very complicated, beautiful life. I had the honor and the pleasure to experience her awesome depiction of her transition from refugee to the American Dream. She performed a flawless one-woman show that made me feel as though I was living the experience. Her capability of physically expressing each scene I found to be phenomenal.
