My overall impression

Emily and Elizabeth Hinkler are an incredibly unique pair whose talents absolutely shine in “My Sister”. They carry Janet Schlapkohl’s script effortlessly as both are electric throughout their performances. An entirely dialogue-based show, it could be easy to be bogged down by the language, but the Hinklers glide through the dark world of pre-war Berlin with invigorating energy, aided by the masterful direction of Paul David Story. And despite the location and subject matter, there is wonderful humor sprinkled throughout, never making light of the cerebral palsy inhabited by one sister, or the never-ending artistic struggle of the other. Subtlety is key in the show, so that when the girls do get to revel in their cabaret performances, we relish the singing and showmanship. One of the best shows I’ve seen at Fringe, I can’t recommend the play enough.
