My overall impression

I’ve finally found the chance to compose words to my thoughts about this thoughtful, intense, and provoking play. MY SISTER is a journey of twin sisters, Magda and Matilde, and their struggle to find their place in the world. The sisters are played by phenomenal twin actors Emily and Elizabeth Hinkler, who bring such humanity to their roles that at times I forgot I was watching a play, and was instead in their living room. I must say, I was uncomfortable watching. This discomfort and anxiety pierced me like an IV until my veins were pulsing with discomfort. Watching the play unfold does not give its audiences a “good” feeling, but that is not the intention of MY SISTER. It’s supposed to sting and move through you, to demand your attention to confront such issues as human rights, disability awareness, and freedom of expression, to see a personal slice of life during the National Socialist regime and simultaneously examine life today in 2015. How can these worldwide issues be fully addressed if we are avoiding the fear and pain? The Hinkler Sisters’ acting combined with Schlapkohl’s text is activation- it’s an electricity- a lightning bolt you are afraid to experience yet need it to spark you alive to truly see what is going on in our society and pay attention. MY SISTER is simply is a must see.
