Theatre as expression is an interwoven thread of the heart, mind, and body of the play…in this case, a novella from the early 20th century. Prose into performance…never an easy task, but handled deftly and with great care by Interrobang Departure, Lady into Fox bounds along at an effortless pace, taking the audience along with them. The style is a blend of presentation, casual sharing, and acting…all of it simple, straightforward and engaging. Never mean in spirit, or vicious in attack, the adaptation, by Samuel Hunter, choses a high road of moral compass, but is never preachy. I watched a lady turn into a fox, not with costuming, make-up, or elaborate props but with her body movement and face. I couldn't take my eyes off of Kaplan. She brought an animal to life in a visceral way unlike anything I have ever seen before. There was one scene in particular that I keep thinking back on and in that scene, you see Kaplan's face quickly shift from one emotion to another. It isn't revealed what has changed yet, but you know by looking at her, that prey of some sort has entered the scene and my stomach dropped. The tenderness in Turner's performance sold me on the fantastical storyline. His portrayal of the joys and bitterness of love made the story grounded and honest where it otherwise could have been schlocky. I felt... full review

I enjoyed every second of this beautiful piece! I love a good story and they know how to tell one. All three performers had me on the edge of my on-stage seat! Claire Kaplan is captivating from start to finish, embodying her character with the utmost precision. Lady Into Fox is excellently directed and is a must see! Bravo!... full review

Lady into Fox is deeply simple in it's presentation. Beautifully simple. The actors and creative team are not trying to dazzle their viewers, they are trying just to speak to them. And speak they do, in plain clothing, on a rug surrounded by pillows and books, lamps, wooden stumps, and their audience, who are as much a part of the scenery as anything that existed in the room when they entered. The story is fantastical (a woman is turned, inexplicably, into a fox!) but Interrobang Departure makes no concessions to this fantasy. They embrace it, and the relative simplicity of the space and the elasticity of the performers allows the fantasy to exist vividly in the minds of the audience members and dance in that glorious space between their... full review
